California Energy Commission Postpones Enforcement of Energy Consumption Disclosure Law From July 1st to September 1, 2013
In 2007, the California state legislature passed legislation requiring commercial property owners to disclose, record, and track data on the energy consumption of their buildings. The legislation, enacted to promote energy efficiency in California, requires that beginning:
- July 1, 2013 – Such information be disclosed, recorded and tracked by commercial property owners with buildings over 50,000 square feet.
- January 1, 2014 – Such information be disclosed, recorded and tracked by commercial property owners with buildings over 10,000 square feet.
- July 1, 2014 – Such information be disclosed, recorded and tracked by commercial property owners with buildings 5,000 square feet or larger.
Although the requirements under the new law take effect beginning July 1, 2013, the California Energy Commission has issued a notice that it will be postponing enforcement of the new law until September 1, 2013.
